From Curiosity to Creativity: My Work Experience Week at 438 Marketing

This month, we had the pleasure of welcoming Ebony into the agency for a week of work experience. It was clear right from the start she had a talent and passion for copywriting so we made sure she had space to explore, learn from the team around her, and build confidence working on live briefs and creative tasks.

Below, Ebony shares her own account of the week, from first-day nerves to finding her creative feet and discovering what life as a 438-er is really like!

My week at 438 Marketing

Monday 12th January

On Monday the 12th of January 2026, I started my work experience at 438 Marketing in Knutsford.

One of my first tasks I had to complete was research on who the company was, as well as what they wanted to achieve, giving summaries on some of their projects they have completed. I chose to write about their recent partnerships with Subaru and the Joshua Tree, a cancer charity for children and the families affected.

Tuesday 13th January

On the second day of my work experience, more people started to come in and it made me more nervous… not for long though, as they were all very friendly and shook my hand!

The first thing I had to do that morning was to attend a social media team meeting at 10am, which was quite different from what I had to do yesterday, yet still very entertaining and enjoyable. I was given a wide range of tasks, all varying in themes, but still of the same topic. I decided to go with the second task, which was to investigate Terry Lifts and how to help them boost their business inside of the online world.

In this task, I had to research their competitors and their socials, gaining an understanding of how they marketed their products and what Terry’s could do to make them stand out from the others.

Wednesday 14th January

Having my first task completed, I was quickly given another; to write a script for Ecolab’s new product! One thing about me is that I love writing and getting the opportunity to get as creative as this made me really happy. I personally love to write down my ideas before typing them up on my laptop, as I feel it gives a more authentic vibe to my work and also helps me think clearer.

20 minutes later, I had my first draft, confident, I started writing. Along the way, I made a few tweaks towards my project, yet for the most part I kept it the same as it was a pretty simple idea. From then on, I started to create different versions of how the product could be presented (poetry, storytelling etc.) to see which was the best version. I decided on the script as I thought it was my best work, but still showcased my other versions!

After I completed my Ecolab script, I had a meeting at 2pm to talk about film partnerships with Isuzu. I found this very interesting and fun, as you have a chance to go to the premiers of said movies. Overall the whole process seems very exciting.

Thursday 15th January

Today is my last day working inside of the building, as tomorrow I work from home. I am scheduled to have a session with Scott, 438’s copywriter, which I am so excited for because I love writing so much, it’s a deep passion of mine and I can’t wait to see what I get to do!

When I first came in this morning, I passed some gifts to Jo and the team because my time here has been so warm and welcoming. I’m sad this is my last day with everyone, but I’m glad I’ve had this opportunity as it’s helped me develop the skills I already have, as well as gain some new ones. So far, my favourite thing to do was to probably write that script for Ecolab, as it really let me be creative.

Now I only have half an hour left of my day and I’ve just finished writing a film script for Isuzu’s Valentine’s Day ad, which I absolutely loved doing as it was SUCH a fun thing to do. I genuinely think I might do this when I’m older, this is something I could see myself doing.

My last and final task of the day was to design a Valentine’s Day email for Isuzu, which I had lots of fun with yet again!

Ebony approached the week with curiosity, enthusiasm and a genuine passion for writing, and it was great to see her confidence grow as the week progressed. She took on every task with care and openness, and brought thoughtful ideas to each brief she worked on. We loved having her as part of the team and we’re really pleased to have played a small part in her creative journey!

“It was great to have Ebony in the agency with us for a whole week. Her curiosity and willingness to learn resulted in her getting stuck into various creative exercises for various members of the team which I hope provided invaluable experience. We wish Ebony continued success with her studies and her love for creative writing!” Jo Green, Group Account Director
